I walked forward through the darkened complex. What little light penetrated the building might have come from the moon, or it might have come from some light set far overhead, I couldn’t tell. I was too focused on the mission at hand to look up. Next to me and slightly behind was a man I didn’t know the name of, but I had the distinct impression I knew him well, and that we were friends. I can’t explain how I knew he was there, I never looked around, but somehow I just knew it instinctively, just as I knew that behind the both of us was a group of soldier I had brought along to aid in the hunt. I have the feeling there was another man there, one who commanded authority, but I’m not entirely sure. I never saw him, in any case. Not because I was trying to avoid seeing him, just that his path just never crossed my vision. Our clothes were dark and black to fit the surrounding hall. As we made our way up some stairs, we were greeted by a group of three females. I don’t remember much about two of them which stood to the right and left behind the third one, all I know is that they were some sort of escort. The one in front had a light green-ish dress and long blonde hair which hung at her back. Her face was proud and regal, entirely to the point of looking arrogant. This would have made her look quite unpleasant, if not for the decent attractiveness of her face. She greeted us, and told us the detail of the hunt. I wasn’t paying attention much, but somewhere in my heart I knew that the person we hunted was the sister of my friend. Despite the fact that I knew this, my heart was hardened toward the fact, and my personality at the time felt cold. I don’t remember much of the conversation that followed, but I do remember my friend pleading with me to take her in alive. I responded, saying “All right, we bring her in alive if possible.” I said it mostly to him, but I said it loud enough that the rest of our soldiers could hear. I can’t recall much of the hunt, either, but I can recall that I was a crack shot with sniper rifle I carried, bringing down every kill with one shot. I don’t know what we were killing, all I know was that they were humanoid in shape. After a certain amount of time searching, We came to a place where there was a large room and at the end of it were two stairways parallelling the wall coming in from opposite sides to a small balcony in the center of the far wall, where we could see a door inset. We went to the door and opened it to reveal a room with a table and chairs. The woman in the green dress entered along with my group to discuss how to further continue the hunt. As they talked, I noticed my friend leave the room, and a few moments later I followed him. I went out onto the balcony and leaned against the railing there, looking out into the barren room. I saw how the light fell on it and noticed the strange beauty it possessed. Presently though, I heard voices. I went to the edge of the balcony, right at the joint where it touched the stairs. Looking down, I saw my friend talking with someone I instinctively knew to be his sister. I’m not sure how I could tell, only being able to see the tops of their heads and their shoulders, but I knew. I knew that I was not supposed to kill her, and take her in, but didn’t care at the moment. All I had was cold instinct telling me what to do. I readied my rifle and shot down ward at her, but I missed. Me friend looked up and she ran toward a corner roughly ten feet from the edge of the stairs. I readied my rifle and shot again. I knew that I should have hit her directly in the back, but as she didn’t go down, I had no choice but to assume that I had missed. I called to the rest of my group, telling them that I had found her, and where. Reflecting on it, I now notice that I had been a man of few words, as I had not said many of the course of the whole hunt. In fact, I believe, until this point, I hadn’t said anything since I had said that we were to take my friend’s sister alive. as I was calling to my squad, I twisted and detached the barrel from my rifle, bringing it into automatic mode, and fired off a burst of shots at my quarry, hoping that if a precise shot would miss, a burst wouldn’t. However, she still refused to fall, making it to the corner and going around it. It was at this point I noticed a rather ethereal quality to her. I dropped my rifle and ran after her, withdrawing a revolver as I did so. It was a large revolver, with the chambers looking like they were for bullets the size that would fit a sniper’s rifle anyway, but I wasn’t noticing this during the hunt. This was my weapon and I was quite familiar with it. I pulled it from it’s holster and raced around the corner. As I saw her running I shot with the revolver over and over until the round was empty, knowing that every one of those shots should have hit her. I wasn’t running after her, I was just walking at a decent pace,
